Black Holes

A black hole is one of the most fascinating and extreme phenomena in the universe . It is a region of space where gravity is so incredibly strong that nothing not even light can escape its pull.

HOW THEY ARE FORMED ?

When a star much larger than our sun runs out of fuel , it can no longer support it own weight . The core collapses inward under the force of its own gravity , which creates a massive explosion called a supernova and leaving behind a black hole.

WHY ARE THEY BLACK ?

Black holes are not holes in the sense of being empty, they are packed with a massive amount of matter in a very small space . They appear to be black because they sallow all light that hits them, reflecting nothing back to our eyes or telescope . So you might be wondering then how did we detect this ? Well scientists study them by observing how their intense gravity affects nearby stars and gas.

WHAT ABOUT ITS SIZE ?

Black holes come in different size. The smallest has a mass about 3 times that of our sun. The biggest one scientist have found so far has a mass about 800 billion times that of our sun.

1.The Yellow Star

This is a normal star , much like our sun but it will be close to the the black hole because the black holes gravity is so strong, it begins to pull the outer layers of gas away from the star.

2.Gas from the star

You can see a steam of gas stretching from the yellow star towards the black hole . This is the stars matter being stolen . It doesn't fall straight instead , it spirals around the black hole.

3.Disk of hydrogen (Accretion Disk)

As the gas spirals inward , it flattens out into a spinning disk of hydrogen . The glow is due to the heat causing the disk to glow brightly in colours like red , orange and white which is why we can see where a black hole is even though the hole itself is invisible.

4. The Black Hole

The tiny dark spot at the center is the black hole itself . This is the region where gravity is so intense that nothing can escape. The disk of gas surrounds it , slowly feeding matter into the center .

5.The White Cone

The long white beam shooting out from the center is a jet . The Cause :Not all the gas from the star gets swallowed ,intense magnetic fields and high energy forces at the center of the disk launch some of the particles outward at nearly the speed of light. The Direction : These jets always shoot out from the poles (the top and bottom) of the black hole, creating that cone shape you see in the above image.

The study of black holes is a journey into the unknown . While they appear to be regions of nothingness where light cannot escape , they actually hold the answers to everything from the fabric of spacetime to the origins of our universe . The more we look into the darkness , the more we learn about light.
